Walt'z Fish Shak
About This Spot
Walt’z Fish Shak is a quietly inviting corner of Madeira Beach where the essence of coastal life settles into a comfortable rhythm. The moment you step inside, there’s a feeling of genuine familiarity—like wandering into a longtime neighbor’s casual spot rather than a polished destination. The atmosphere moves at an easy pace, shaped by a mix of steady local regulars and curious visitors who appreciate the authenticity wrapped up in every detail.
Time here is measured by the fresh catch pulled from nearby waters, not by a hurried menu turnover. This intentional simplicity means the offerings evolve with the tide, and sharing a meal becomes an unhurried moment to savor the kind of seafood that tastes as if it was caught just hours before reaching your plate. There’s an approachable warmth in the kitchen’s choices and a quiet pride in dishes like lightly fried snapper or delicately grilled sea scallops—each bite reflecting the shore’s quiet generosity.
The room itself, once an old officers’ quarters, holds an understated charm that feels both rooted in local history and effortlessly relaxed. Hosts and servers know you by name and invite you into a space where hospitality feels personal, not performative. This is a place where the smallness of the menu speaks volumes about dedication to quality and respect for the fishers who sustain it. It never feels rushed; instead, it encourages connection—between friends, strangers, and the flavors of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Whether you’re savoring a glass of chilled Chardonnay or noshing on a favorite shareable like smoked fish spread, Walt’z Fish Shak offers more than a meal—it’s a moment to feel the tides, the community, and the kind of easygoing spirit that makes Madeira Beach memorable long after you leave.

This local gem is amazing. The freshest fish in the area. Small menu due to freshly caught and if you wait too long the item might be sold out. I always get the red snapper lightly fried and it’s my favorite in town. Such a cool and laidback vibe. I really appreciate small local restaurants whenever I travel and respect the atmosphere and those who frequent there. I am always greeted kindly and love the owners. Their restaurant is like stepping into Key West. If you’re looking for a large group or a large menu selection or touristy place this will not be your jam.

Let me say, this place has the best and freshest seafood and superbly well cooked. Waltz, Suzanne , and Christine make are the nicest people. Main difference is this place is there for the food quality and not a tourist, cookie cutter, restaurant. The shrimp and fish spread are amazing. I went 2 times in a days and because i was leaving on Monday and they close Sunday, i ate 2 dinners Saturday night. Only free parking in Johns Pass. I can’t say how much I enjoyed the food as well as Waltz and the family. Absolutely loved this place.

Great food. Felt sorry for the waitress. She was all alone & the place was packed. Fun place.

Loved this place. Owners were incredibly friendly and nice. Has its' own parking on backside which is rare at John's Pass. The crab soup and mahi teriyaki burger were both yummy. Wife loved the smoked fish spread and shrimp and brother loves the grouper cakes and calamari. Generous pours of wine and was told restaurant was an old officers quarters that were moved to the current location.

As a local partition attorney, I can say without hesitation that Walt’s Fish Shack is the best seafood restaurant in Madeira Beach. They serve the freshest fish in the area, backed by a 21-year relationship with trusted commercial fishermen. Every dish reflects authentic Florida flavor and unmatched quality. The servers treat you like family, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit special. Dining here truly feels like enjoying a slice of Key West in Madeira Beach—casual, friendly, and unforgettable. If you’re looking for fresh seafood in Madeira Beach with top service and authentic local charm, Walt’s Fish Shack should be your first stop
